For me, there is usually a very clear line between an elegant wedding and a rustic/shabby-chic wedding ... but in the case of Desiree and Tyler's wedding, there are elements of both that work so well together! You probably already know how much I adore the zigzag called Chevron and I am in love with the bright color combo: yellow and aqua ... plus, how darling are these two!? Desiree: Do I have to pick one? There were a few moments throughout the day when time seemed to stop for the flutter of a second. Where we could take a deep breath and just be present in the moment. Specifically, when my sisters and best friend helped me into my gown, one or two minutes into the first look when we held hands and got to look at each other and take a deep breath, taking photographs down by the cliffs of Del Mar and having a train scare us as it honked speeding by sending us into fits of laughter, at dinner on the terrace when the sun peeked out as it was setting and bathed our guests in this amazing warm light, skipping the traditional dance with my dad and opting for some fun and in the elevator headed up to our room- shoes in hand and eyes heavy from the amazing day that flashed before our eyes.
Tyler: My favorite moment of the day was seeing Desiree for the first time in her dress. She kept everything about it a surprise from me, which I know was very hard for her to do. She took my breath away and was completely stunning. She was so beautiful and I knew we were about to have one of the most exciting days of our lives.
I'm not a very girly girl so we knew that our flowers needed to be fun and quirky but still make somewhat of a statement. We chose to use Tam Ashworth at Isari Flower Studio to help translate our vision. Knowing we wanted to stay away from orchids and roses Tam was able to create visual interest on our 20 person tables with vignettes of lots of different vessels and blooms. During the ceremony we wanted there to be two focal points; one being the birch arch with yellow mums in glass globes and the second being these massive urns with china mums and spider mums. She went all out and created a look that really suited us.
Everyone we chose to be on our wedding "team" was chosen for their incredible work as well as the connection we felt with them. Jeff and Betsy of La Vida Creations were another "you had me at hello" choice. They are incredible photographers and people whom we now consider friends. They capture what really happened and show the beauty in it. Maybe anyone could have posed us for a pretty group picture, but Jeff and Betsy aren't contrived. They have that talent of bringing YOU out in a photograph. They are up for anything and even packed up for an overnight camping photo shoot for our engagement session, which was a lot of fun for all of us! Their work is beautiful and we love them.
L'Auberge Dal Mar was our first choice for a wedding venue. The feel is sophisticated in an effortless way. It is modern but cozy. Above all the staff at L'Auberge namely Krissie Simek, our extraordinary coordinator, made the venue a winner for us. I had no idea how incredible a coordinator could be. She made the experience fun rather than painstaking, which can be a difficult task when planning a wedding in 6 months. In terms of the venue itself, we really wanted to have our wedding all in one spot. We didn't want people having to find a second location or to wait for pictures to be taken between the ceremony and reception. Although, Tyler and I had the most special of days together, we really wanted our guests to feel like the party was a thank you to them for being a part of our lives. So the convenience of a one venue wedding helped us to make that a reality.
We really wanted our wedding to reflect our fun and playful personalities. It was important to us not to have a 'themey' wedding! There is something about aqua and mustard yellow that call to mind beachy San Diego in the 60's. That idea sort of played throughout how we wanted our day to look, but with an updated vibe. We brought in geometric/chevron pattern, the use of an arrow image and the colors we loved to really personalize our day.
Posh Paperie masterminded our invites. Our initial consultation with them was a riot! I felt like these ladies were great at what they did and had an unrivaled sense of humor. They did a great job and we are so thrilled to have worked with them. They incorporated the patterns and playfulness we wanted to convey right off the bat through our invitations. The also let me say "be there/be square" (instead of happily accepts/regretfully declines) on the response card...which Tyler and I thought was very funny.
I am a personal chef and sometimes wedding food can be underwhelming, we were so proud of the way our personalities translated into our evening's menu. Our event was catered by L'Auberge Del Marand they were incredible. Chef Evan Cruz brought together some of each of our favorite things. We both love shellfish and enjoyed Mini Lobster Rolls, Pork Belly, Shrimp with Sweet Corn, Crab Salads and an assortment of other treats. We capped the night off with Sliders, Mini Porchetta Sandwiches and Fries. We wanted to make sure everyone was well fed!
We had eight small cakes on cake stands I fashioned as a little DIY project. We also had a ninth tiered cake as our official wedding cake. The top tier we cut into was a VERY moist but dense lemon cake. We had trouble cutting into it and eventually I gave up cutting it altogether and let Tyler take over. It was pretty funny!
Tyler and I both went into our wedding knowing it would be incredible because at the end of the day we were to be married and that was the main purpose. Our advice is to understand that a wedding isn't about perfection. It is about the love you share and the vows you say. Everything else is a bonus. You get to throw a great party and celebrate with all of the closest people in your life. Remember to have fun and not to worry about all of the details because everything will come together.
Also, remember it ISN'T all about you. Yes, it is your wedding and the celebration is in your honor, but a wedding is also to thank all of the important people in your life who love and support you. It is to celebrate love and it is meant to be fun! Enjoy it!

What (or who) helped you most in your planning process and/or on your wedding day?
My fiance, now husband, really was a huge help during the planning process. We worked on the wedding together and he helped me make decisions. Our wedding was something that we really wanted to reflect our personalities. We wanted something unique that was customized for us and we really worked together to make that happen! I would also have to say our families were so helpful. We all got to Destin a week before the wedding and had a wonderful week long vacation to enjoy each other’s company. Both of our parents helped us to get everything ready for the big weekend, my sister and sister-in-laws were always asking if we needed any help with anything. It was really a big family wedding and everyone pitched in to make it work!
What was the most important thing to you when deciding who to work with for your wedding?
We wanted to work with someone who could understand our personalities and was able to understand our vision then recommend things that fit within that vision. We wanted these people to be responsive and able to execute our plans, and we also wanted someone who was fun and able to bring ideas to the table.
